Design Table in Array Studio

The experimental design is contained in what Array Studio terms a "Design Table". This table describes the experimental setup and should include anything the user might want to use for analysis or visualization in their experimental analysis.

The first column of the "Design Table" (which can be named anything such as "chip", "observation", etc.) should contain every "observation" (i.e. chip) in your data set. The names and number of observations in the Design Table should be consistent with the names and number of observation in your dataset. Each additional column in the "Design Table" is up to the user, and should be created based on the design of the experiment. For instance, time, treatment, and group (which can be a combination of time and treatment) are common columns. Other useful columns include information about the batch, patient information, hybridization information, etc.).

The design table can be attached when importing data into Array Studio for OmicData objects, or at any other time by right-clicking on the Design node of a dataset and clicking Import. Any updates to the design table should be propagated to other table objects in the project by using this method: Table_PropagateColumns.pdf

Users may also use the Table Menu to manually add columns to an empty or existing design table by using the Table | Columns | Add Columns command.

Alternatively, if samples and its design information were already registered in an Array Server (e.g. via sample registration file or register sample GUI), users may right click the Design node of a data-set, and select Refresh. This will allow the registered design information to be appended to the design table.
